2020 A Wade Year with a difference
Who would have thought that when the UK was locked down in March 2020, over a year later we would still be in lockdown, in fact our 3rd. The club has adapted to the on going restrictions and the challenges that the pandemic has bought. It has been a difficult year for everyone, many have lost loved ones and had to struggle with the virus themselves, but here at the club we have tried to introduce some normality to our Wade Collecting and keep some interest during these unprecedented times. Our events were cancelled during this time but we managed to move them online. The first being the Spring/Easter event in April 2020, this was a challenge for us and it does show if you watch the Facebook Live event on the Facebook Group facebook.com/groups/wadecollectorsclub but we rose to the challenge and watching the different live events throughout the year, the improvements are evident, although we are amateurs at these things, we hope we provided collectors with some fun and interest. Our events continue as does the UK lockdown but we hope we will soon be able to welcome Wade collectors back to the Wade Collectors Centre on Saturday 3rd July when all restrictions have been lifted.
When the lockdown began, we started running a weekly draw and these proved very popular, I think taking peoples minds away from the pandemic and for a little while each week forgetting what was happening in the world outside and thinking about Wade collecting for a while giving some relief for a short time.
The year also saw Jeremy Wade (Sir George Wade’s Grandson) who has been the Wade Club President since its inception in 1994 address collectors during our live events. Jeremy’s cousin Felicity Graham, daughter of Iris Wade Carryer, was also involved; she is another of Sir George Wade’s grandchildren. She was thrilled to be able to continue the family involvement in the Wade Collector’ Club. With her experience in radio she has written and recorded several interesting articles for the Wade Live Events. Listen out for her next recording during the Wade Fest Live on July 24th this year.
The Wade Family continue to contribute to the Club, it’s like the family in the 21st century are once again involved in the Wade Collecting world, like the old days, the heyday of the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. Some of the pieces being produced through the Club are reminiscent of the Jessie van Hallen and William Harper eras. The family are proud that the Wade name is still at the forefront in the world of collecting and their involvement continues, their knowledge, and history is of such importance to the World of Wade. Anthony Wade and Iris Wade Carryer the children of Sir George, were so instrumental in many of the great Wade pieces we now crave and collect, Noddy Set, First Whimsies, The Leprechauns, Pogo, The Pex Fairy. The Disney ranges plus many others. These are just some of the most sort after pieces in the Wade Collecting World even now and their legacy lives on in the World of Wade Collecting. You can watch Iris Wade Carryer’s video Bash on Regardless on this website.
During the pandemic, the Club has produced some of the most popular pieces in the last few years. We had the Rooster Whimsie which was well received by collectors and most have sold out, the large 8” Toucan figure which sold out in a few days, again this was one of the many pieces the club produced which was so very well received by those collectors who managed to obtain one of these wonderful figures. Another popular set of Whimsies were the Thelwell Ponies, these are a great addition to any Whimsie collection and the Thelwell world were thrilled that a Whimsie range has been added to the long list of Thelwell collectables that have been produced over the last few decades a great tribute to the Late Norman Thelwell. We managed to meet the Thelwell family just before the lockdown began, and they gave us a great insight into the equine world of Thelwell.
The Summer saw two online live events, our Summer Open Day which was a bit of a hit and miss event but collectors still seemed to like being able to catch up with others during the show. The Wade Fest was in its 20th year and everyone was so disappointed that the show had to be cancelled. Once again I believe we rose to the challenge and began planning another live event, this time it was a broadcast rather than just a Facebook live. We used the Zoom software for the first time. Zoom has become such a useful tool for millions around the world to keep in touch during the pandemic. We embraced the software and broadcast the live show for the first time which proved to be a great success and other live broadcasts followed. The Halloween Spooktacular, The Wade Christmas Bonanza and this year's Spring/Easter Open Day. Unfortunately this year's Wade Fest has also had to be cancelled but we are planning a bigger and even better live broadcast for the 21st Wade Fest Show. Don’t miss it!
We have to thank all those collectors who enthusiastically embraced the live shows and contributed videos of themselves. Many of you took up the challenge and made some great films, which have become part of the Wade Club history of the pandemic, we thank the following for their contributions: David, Michael and Amber Price, Angela Goodsell, Janet and Paul Watson, Paula Murcott, David Cartlidge- Swain, Jessica Bick, Richard and Chad, Carole Murdock, Valerie Moody, The Lowe Family, Francios Adjei, Jazmine Williams, Patty Keenan, Jan Cope, Helen Smith, Dave Lee, Diane Martin Millisor, Trista and Sharon Merrill, Michelle and Bill Tremblay, Paul Farmer O.B.E, Mike Posgay, Ian Warner, Alicia and Christine Feller, Cheryl Provost, Jim and Peg Nelson and of course all you Wade Collectors whose enthusiasm keeps the name Wade at the forefront of collecting.
We look forward to being able to resume our in person events, and this will begin with the Summer Open Day on Saturday July 3rd, at the Wade Collectors’ Centre in Arundel. We hope that those collectors who can make it will visit in person so mark the date in your Wade Diary. We hope to see you then.
