West Coast Wade Fair 2007 by Ed Rucker of Happy Wade-ing The West Coast Wade Fair was held 18th/19th of August at the American Legion Hall in Portland, Oregon. The fair was hosted by Michael and Reva Matthew. After a hiatus of 3 years, the West Coast collectors were ready for a local Wade event! The collectors quickly came through the doors and grabbed up pieces to add to their collection from 14 dealers. There were pieces from the early 1900’s, jugs, Faust Lang, ladies, whimsies, Irish Porcelain, minikins and all the way up to current commissions and club specials. There was something for everyone. The specials for the show were a set of Soldier whimsies from Michael and Reva in a LE 250 sets. The sets contained figures from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. LE 25 sets of soldiers (100 pcs) were produced with a gold hat for the goody bags. Each bag contained a single LE 25 soldier. Happy Wade-ing commissioned a LE 75 Leprechaun on Duck colorway whimsie for the event. Saturday night was filled with fun and food. Wade Collectors meet for a delicious meal of either a steak or grilled chicken with all the fixins and was catered by the local American Legion Post. During the evening in a live auction, the collectors raised money for the charity of choice – the Western Medical Command Center, home of the Madigan Army Medical Center. At the auction, well over $3,000 was raised for the soldiers! The auction featured three one-of-a-kinds donated by Wade. Carole Murdock received an appreciation plaque for all her years of support to the West Coast Wade events. There was also time for chatting up Wade and fun and games this evening. A fun “mystery” auction was held were the prizes ranged from a rubber chicken, feather boa and bubble gun to a LE 10 sold gold Wade soldier! You never know what the plain brown paper bag held! Sunday morning brought brisk sales as the collectors purchased items that they dreamt about all night. At the end of the show, everyone is awaiting next year when it will be done again but this time in June! See you then!
